Dog owner convicted after man suffers serious bite wound

A Chatham dog owner has been found guilty under the Dog Owners' Liability Act after a 64-year-old man was bitten while trying to protect his pet.

Animal Control Services said on January 3, an American Bulldog ran across McNaughton Avenue near Sandys Street toward the 64-year-old man and his small dog. The man tried to protect his dog from the attack and suffered a serious bite wound to his left hand.

The man was taken to the hospital by EMS and later transfered to a London hospital for surgery. A metal plate and pins were placed in his wrist and the man is still recovering from his injuries, Animal Control Services said.

As a result of the attack, the bulldog was held by PAW Pet and Wildlife Rescue for bite quarantine and later humanely euthanized.

On Wednesday, the bulldog's owner, a 29-year-old Chatham man, was convicted of not exercising reasonable precautions to prevent a dog from biting a person contrary to the Dog Owners' Liability Act. He was also fined $2,505.
