Construction of a new student housing facility in Chatham may have hit a snag.
The Ministry of Labour has confirmed to Blackburn News that it is investigating a complaint about suspected asbestos. The work site is located on King Street in Chatham and was formerly used as a YMCA building. Everlast Group Ltd. recently announced plans to turn the building into student housing "La Residence".
The first phase of the project had a completion date set for sometime in March, with the second phase scheduled to start in June.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour said the asbestos complaint was filed on Wednesday.
Everlast Group has been issued two orders, which are for general housekeeping and to provide adequate lighting for workers. A requirement was also issued to Everlast Group "to not to disturb suspected asbestos-containing material in a specific area."
It's unknown how the ministry's investigation will affect the work at the site. Blackburn News has reached out to Victor Boutin with Everlast Group but has yet to receive a response.
