CK Hindus hold traditional festival to celebrate good over evil

The Chatham-Kent Hindu community is getting ready for a longtime tradition to celebrate good over evil.

They are celebrating the Navratri Festival from Monday until October 5, 2022.

Spokesperson Vishal Patel said the festival is more than ten thousand years old.

Patel said the Hindu community in Chatham-Kent has travelled to Windsor or to the GTA in the past for the festive celebration.

"This adds to the diversity of Chatham-Kent," said Patel. "The community really feels connected and rooted with Chatham Kent."

He said Navratri is one of the most important festivals in the Hindu calendar and is also a celebration of women’s power. The festival is celebrated all over the world for nine days, hence the name Navratri. Nav means nine and Ratri means nights.

Patel said the celebrations also involve lots of dancing.
