The Chatham Kiwanis Music Festival is back after two years of performances being held virtually.
The competition, which was cancelled in 2020 and held online for the past two years, is making its return to in-person performances this week.
"During the COVID-19 pandemic, students did work really hard to participate in the virtual festival but they are all really excited to be back playing live," said Sue Lowther, who is a festival co-chair. "It's a different ball game when it's live."
The festival starts Tuesday with performances at Holy Trinity and St. Paul's Anglican Church, as well as with performances at Studio One at the Chatham Cultural Centre.
Over 180 youths are expected to participate.
Lowther said the festival will feature a variety of musical performances, workshops and competitions, culminating in an awards ceremony recognizing top performers.
"We're so thrilled to see all of the talents in Chatham-Kent," said Lowther. "Lots of dedicated families, students, and teachers support each other. Live music is alive and well in Chatham-Kent."
Although the return to in-person performances will be something to celebrate, this year's event will also be bittersweet. George Service, a former festival co-chair, passed away last year.
"He's greatly missed and well remembered," said Lowther. "We remember all of the work that George did."
Admission won't be charged for the competitions through April 17, but donations will be accepted.
The festival’s grand concert on May 16 at the Kiwanis Theatre will remain a ticketed event.
