CK police provide update on weapons incident that shut down Downtown Chatham

A 19-year-old Chatham man has been identified as the attacker in a violent incident in downtown Chatham that prompted police to close down Tecumseh Park for several hours last week.

In an update issued Tuesday morning, Chatham-Kent police said their investigation showed that two men and two women got together for a prearranged meeting on King Street in Chatham at around 2 a.m. on Monday, March 18 to "resolve a dispute."

CK police said during that meeting, a man wearing a balaclava attacked another man with a knife, injuring the other man.

Police said a woman who was also present there acted in self-defence and injured the attacker while also sustaining an injury herself.

A fourth person who was there at the time was not hurt or involved in the fight, but was identified as a witness.

Police said all three of the individuals received medical attention.

As part of their investigation, police arrested a 19-year-old Chatham man on Monday, March 25 and charged him with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of failing to comply with a sentence, and one count each of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, failing to comply with a probation order, and wearing a disguise with intent to commit a crime.

He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.
