Now that the community consultations are complete and the search for more hazardous gas wells is underway, the more detailed work to rebuild downtown Wheatley and its economy is about to begin.
Chatham-Kent Council will get an update Monday night from Wheatley Community Economic Development Officer Kyra Knapp on what's being done and has been done following the August 26, 2021 hydrogen sulfide gas explosion that rocked downtown Wheatley.
In her report, Knapp said the final draft of the Community Action Plan will be completed between October and December and the Urban Visioning Project will start in November.
She noted phase one actions, including studies, planning for future infrastructure, and the development of programs and materials to support the revitalization efforts will be implemented with monitoring and evaluation processes set up in December.
"The ongoing revitalization efforts in Wheatley reflect a comprehensive approach to recovery, addressing not only the physical reconstruction of the downtown area, but also the economic and social revitalization of the community," wrote Knapp. "The establishment of the Wheatley Recovery Task Force and the hiring of an Economic Development Officer in March 2024 underscore the commitment to a structured and strategic recovery process."
Knapp noted the consultation process has been extensive to ensure that the voices of residents, business owners, and other stakeholders are heard and integrated into the recovery plans.
"The high response rates to surveys and active participation in community consultations indicate strong community engagement, which is crucial for the success of the revitalization efforts," Knapp reported.
Council will also hear that the reports and studies done to date, including the Business Mix Analysis and Resident Trade Report Survey, provide valuable insights that will guide future development efforts.
Knapp noted the documents highlight the current strengths and areas for improvement in Wheatley’s business landscape that will allow for targeted work that aligns with the community’s needs and aspirations.
"The focus on transparency, ongoing communication, and community involvement will be key to maintaining momentum and ensuring that the recovery efforts are sustainable and responsive to the evolving needs of the community," Knapp said.
The gas explosion caused significant damage to businesses, injured 20 people, and displaced several families.
