Efforts continue to save Clearville Park in east CK

The sale of municipally-owned Clearville Park should be hotly contested at Chatham-Kent Council Monday night.

East Kent Councillor John Wright wants the sale to be deferred until "full" public consultation and a review have been undertaken with users of Clearville Park and others.

"This proposed divestment has not been communicated to the users of Clearville Park or surrounding area," said Wright when he presented his notice of motion. "Other cost-sharing or revenue opportunities may be discovered once public consultation is launched."

South Kent Councillor Trevor Thompson is looking for municipal administration to meet with staff from the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) and a report come back to Council in the Spring of 2025 regarding the potential ownership and operation of Clearview Park by LTVCA.

The divestment of Clearville Park was proposed during the 2025 budget deliberations when administration noted park improvements will cost the municipality approximately $4 million over the next decade.

Clearville Park, where Clearville Road meets Lake Erie southeast of Highgate, is over 100 years old. It has a campground, trailer park with seasonal lots, a beach, a playground and pavilion, and wooded nature trails.
