Dog tag deadline approaching in Chatham-Kent

There are just a few weeks left for local dog owners to purchase their dog tag if they want to avoid a late fee.

Tags must be purchased by Tuesday, March 31. After that, a late fee will be added.

"Either go online through pawr.org, or call 311 and order it over the phone, or attend any municipal centre to get your dog tag," said Nancy Havens, Manager of Licensing, Municipality of Chatham-Kent.

The cost for a tag if your dog is spayed or neutered is $30.50, and if they're not, it's $41.25. If you have purchased a tag but lost it, you can get a replacement for $5.

Dog owners are also reminded to pick up after their pets.

"There are fines associated if you don't, so if you're caught not picking up after your dog, it's $240," said Havens. "And please dispose of it. A lot of people will go pick it up and put it in a bag, but they don't put it where it's supposed to go. That is not disposing of it properly."

Pet owners can also be fined $240 for not having their dog on a leash in a public place.
