Protest against Ontario Government planned for Wallaceburg

A protest against the Ontario Government is being held later this month in Wallaceburg.

Organized by Dresden Citizens Against Reckless Environmental Disposal (Dresden C.A.R.E.D.), the rally is in response to several decisions made by Premier Doug Ford's government. This includes the Dresden Landfill, cuts to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), and changes to freedom-of-information laws.

Similar protests were held across the province at the end of March, which included one in Wallaceburg.

"We're happy to stand alongside every other community doing these protests," said Rob Simpson, Chairman of Dresden C.A.R.E.D.

Simpson believes the protest is needed because he feels the provincial government is ignoring anyone with an issue.

"He said on TV, 'If you don't like what we're doing, tell us, and we won't do it anymore.' Well, can you hear us now, Doug?" said Simpson.

He also argued that protesting can be a useful tactic. While it doesn't always work, it has in recent memory.

Simpson mentioned protests against the decision by Ford's government to allow development across the Greenbelt in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). A move that was later reversed by the province.

"Everyone thought it was a done deal. Doug Ford blinked and backed down," added Simpson.

The upcoming protest will be on April 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on McNaughton Avenue in front of Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Steve Pinsonneault's constituency office.
