Toronto Police are scrambling for clues as to who dug an underground tunnel near York University and what it was used for.
On January 14, a Conservation Officer found a large pile of dirt near the fence line of the Rexall Centre Sports and Entertainment Complex in Toronto's Black Creek Park.
When police were called, a tunnel spanning 33' was discovered. It was over 6' high and 3' wide. The walls and roof were supported by lumber.
Inside the tunnel investigators found a generator, gas cans, food and drink containers, work gloves, a wheel barrow, lightbulbs, and a sump pump. There was a rosary and poppy pinned to the wall. The entrance was covered by dirt and a wooden lid.
Police say the tunnel has not been linked to any criminal activity or terrorist groups.
“I don’t have a working theory. We’re open. We go with the evidence," says Deputy Chief Mark Saunders at a news conference. "This was built with a considerable amount of sophistication."
Since the discovery the tunnel has been filled in. There is no threat to public safety.
