Police to Review Sexual Assault Investigation Procedures

The London Police Service is pledging a review of its investigation of sexual assault cases.

Chief John Pare has announced that the service will conduct a review of the way police investigate and clear sexual assault cases, along with the method in which they are categorized and cleared, according to a statement on the service's official website.

The move comes after a report in the Globe and Mail said one in five reports of sexual assault in Canada are deemed "unfounded" by police. In London, the figure was nearly one in three.

“The London Police Service is committed to providing the best service possible in response to victims of crime and this review will assist us in maintaining the confidence and trust of the community," said Pare in the statement.

The review will also look at the training methods for police in sexual assault cases, in hopes that such training can be enhanced and that there will be improvement in the way police respond to victims' needs.

The review will be conducted in cooperation with community partners.
