Sunshine List Growing At London Police Service

Close to 400 London police officers made $100,000 or more last year.

The so-called "Sunshine List" for the London Police Service shows 382 officers cracked six figures in salary and taxable benefits in 2017, compared to 331 in 2016. The list will be presented at Thursday's meeting of the Police Services Board and is required under the Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act.

The list is made up of officers who made $100,000 or more in gross income, which includes salary, overtime, off-duty pay, retroactive adjustments, or other compensation such as WSIB income.

Not surprisingly, the highest paid person on the London police force is its chief. John Pare had a salary of $228,501.54 with taxable benefits of $9,958.80 last year.

The 2017 list includes 230 constables, up from 181 in 2016. According to a memo from Deputy Chief Darryl Longworth, 81 of those made the list because of "special paid-duty hire-on shifts" in which the money paid is recovered from private sector companies and, therefore, is not paid by taxpayers.

In total, just under $44-million in salary was paid to the 382 officers on the Sunshine List, along with $290,777 in taxable benefits.

Last week, the City of London released its Sunshine List, which showed more than 500 municipal employees made $100,000 or more in 2017. More than half were firefighters.
