Byron house fire deemed suspicious

A fire that tore through a Byron home Monday morning has been deemed suspicious.

Firefighters were called to the two-storey home on Fairlane Cres. around 8:30 a.m. by a neighbour who reported the windows had "blown out."

"When our crews arrived smoke was coming out of the building. Crews made their interior attack, put the fire out, and then cleared the smoke out of the structure," said Acting Deputy Fire Chief Jack Burt.

No one was home at the time of the fire and two dogs that were tied up in the backyard were rescued without incident.

Damage is pegged at $300,000, according to a preliminary estimate.

Investigators with the police street crime unit, along with the London Fire Department, are probing the cause of the fire. The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office was notified, but will not be attending the scene.

"We are very early in our investigation where we are trying to determine the origin, cause and circumstances of the fire," said Burt.

Police are reminding the public to always report suspicious activity or individuals to them.

Anyone with information about this blaze is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
