The province's police watchdog has launched an investigation after a stolen vehicle that had its tires deflated by London police crashed, injuring two people.
Police spotted the vehicle that had been reported stolen in the area of Pond Mills and Thompson roads around 4:50 a.m. on Monday. Officers used a tire deflation device to try and stop the vehicle. It crashed into another vehicle in the area of Pond Mills and Commissioners Road East.
Two people, one from each vehicle involved in the collision, were taken to hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries.
According to police, the driver of the stolen vehicle ran from the scene and as of Monday afternoon had not been found.
As of 12:30 p.m., Commissioners between Frontenac Road and Deveron Crescent remained closed while police investigated the cause of the collision. The closure led to major backups throughout the morning commute, even though police had urged drivers to avoid the area and take an alternate route.
It is not known when the stretch of Commissioners will be reopened.
Due to the police involvement prior to the crash, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified and is probing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
