Highway 401 east of London to close nightly all next week

For four consecutive nights next week all lanes of Highway 401 east of London will be closed.

The nightly closure is to allow construction crews to install girders on the new Dorchester Road Bridge. All eastbound and westbound lanes of the busy highway will be closed from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. beginning on Monday. The nightly closures will end on Friday, according to the Ministry of Transportation.

Eastbound traffic from the 401 will be detoured off and back onto the highway using the Dorchester Road off and on ramps. Westbound traffic will exit the highway at Elgin Road. They will then be routed onto Cromarty Drive to Westchester Bourne Road where they can reenter the highway.

Work to replace the Dorchester Road Bridge has been ongoing since early spring. The old bridge was demolished and cleared from the highway during an overnight closure on April 13. Since then, one westbound and one eastbound lane of the highway at the interchange has been blocked off to allow crews room to work. Dorchester Road is also closed at the highway. Between July and October, the eastbound on and off ramps will also be closed.

The new bridge will include four lanes and a reconfigured interchange design that allows for additional ramps and highway expansion in the future. Construction is expected to be completed by June 2025.

Additional information about the work can be found here.
