Maitland Valley Conservation Continues Restructuring

The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority is continuing efforts to strengthen flood and erosion safety services in 2015.

In a report to Howick Council, General Manager Phil Beard, says the authority is moving ahead with restructuring plans in the coming year.

The MVCA will try to find someone to lease the Falls Reserve Campground. And they are looking for a use for surplus infrastructure such as the mills in Gorrie and Brussels.

The MVCA also plans to limit levy increases to member municipalities to a maximum of $58,000 a year for the next three years.

Howick's proposed levy for the coming year is $49,332.

The MVCA plans to increase fee based services like reforestation. The authority has also contracted out tree planting services, so staff can work with landowners to develop more reforestation projects.

The MVCA board of directors will vote on the 2015 budget March 18.

There are plans to improve a flood forecast system to provide adequate warning and technical support.

Technical training will support the development of appropriate flood and erosion emergency response plans.
