Many Midwestern Ontario Residents Are Heavy Drinkers

There's more evidence that many midwestern Ontario residents drink too much alcohol.

The Huron County Health Unit says one in five residents over the age of 12 are heavy drinkers. That means drinking more than five alcoholic beverages at one time, once a month or more.

The Grey Bruce Health Unit says Grey Bruce has the highest rate of heavy drinking in the province at 54 per cent.

A recent report also found one in five Perth County residents are heavy drinkers.

Canada's guidelines say women should consumer no more than two drinks a day, and men should limit alcohol to three servings a day.

Too much alcohol can lead to long term health effects like liver cirrhosis, cancer and heart problems.

The risks of heavy drinking include alcohol poisoning, violence, risky behavior, poor decision making, and problems with money, work or school.
