'Living Wage' Goes Up in Huron and Perth

The 'living wage' in Perth and Huron counties has gone up.

The United Way's Director of Social Research and Planning Council says the 'living wage' in the two counties is sixteen dollars and forty-seven cents an hour.

Tracy Birtch points out that many people are not aware of what it costs some families to pay their bills, put food on the table, and generally live above the poverty line.

The statistic is intended to be a conversation starter for the discussion around how much people in a community require to maintain a household.

The figure for Huron and Perth counties is comparable to surrounding communities and inflation continues to drive the figure up.

Birtch also points out there are regional differences, and in Halifax the living wage was recently pegged at close to twenty dollars an hour.
