Officials in Kincardine would like to know more about the provincial government's pledge to expand natural gas in rural areas.
Deputy Mayor Jacqueline Faubert says it's too early to know what exactly the $100-million announcement means for the southern Bruce County communities who are attempting to bring in natural gas.
She says there's some concern the fund isn't actually new money, but rather just funds being moved over from a previously-announced infrastructure program.
"There's some indication that money is being spent twice and that the money for natural gas expansion will be coming out of promised money for infrastructure improvements, which didn't sound to me like a fair deal," says Faubert.
Infrastructure Minister Bob Chiarelli was scheduled to meet with Bruce County mayors, including Kincardine Mayor Anne Eadie, on Tuesday in Toronto. Faubert says she's hoping the mayors will be able to shed more light on the details of the program.
Although she says this may not be the announcement the communities in southern Bruce County are looking for, Faubert says it's encouraging that the province is acknowledging the need to further develop natural gas in rural Ontario.
