Saugeen Shores Bike To School Challenge

Elementary students in Saugeen Shores are marking Ontario Bike Month with a friendly challenge.

Students are being encouraged to ride their bike to school every day this week to win the Bike To School Challenge.

Teachers will take a tally of the bikers, and the winning school will get a tree planted for their school yard.

“Biking is an excellent way for children and families to be active together. For parents that normally drop your kids off at school, I challenge you to participate too,” says Lisa Billing, recreation supervisor for the Town of Saugeen Shores. “Biking is good for the body, good for the environment and just all around good fun! It’s hard not to smile when I am riding my bike.”

SauGreen will donate the tree. Other prizes include a pool party, and chamber bucks.

Drivers and pedestrians are being reminded to engage in mutual respect for the roadways by slowing down, using caution, and following the rule of the road.

“We encourage parents to practice a safe route to school with their kids,” says Billing. “A trial run will help foster confidence for both parents and their children before they head off to school on their bikes in the coming week.”

In order to safely enjoy riding your bike, here are some tips to consider from Parachute Canada:

1. Wear a helmet. When properly worn, a helmet can reduce the risk of a serious head injury by up to 80%.

2. Be prepared. Know the rules of the road. Use hand signals and respect traffic signs.

3. Check your ride. A fun & safe cycling experience starts with a properly equipped bicycle. Check the height, tire pressure and brakes.

4. Be a role model. Set a good example and practice safety together.
