Bluewater Board teacher recognized for leadership in outdoor education

A teacher with the Bluewater District School Board has been recognized for her work in developing young leaders through outdoor education.

Tobin Day was named as this year’s recipient of the Dorothy Walter Award for Leadership at the recent Council of Outdoor Educators of Ontario conference.

She was instrumental in creating Owen Sound District Secondary School’s new ECHO program, which is a Specialist High Skills Major in the environment sector.

She also taught or assisted with outdoor-ed programs at Bruce Peninsula District School in Lion’s Head, the Environmental Studies Program at Grey Highlands Secondary School in Flesherton, and ECOShores at Peninsula Shores District School in Wiarton.

She's also been a summer instructor at the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre near Wiarton.

Tobin is currently teaching at Bruce Peninsula District School in Lion’s Head for Semester 1, and Owen Sound District Secondary School for second semester.

The award was created in 1986 in honour of outdoor education enthusiast and leader Dorothy Walter, who committed many years of her life to serving as head of the Camping and Outdoor Education Services for the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation, and supervising the Ontario Camp Leadership Centre.
