Education minister lays out plan for school boards and students with autism

The province is introducing some new programs to support students with autism and for the people who support them.

Education Minister Lisa Thompson made the announcement in Ottawa today at the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association annual meeting.

"For each new student entering the school system, school boards will receive an average of $12,300 per student," said Thompson. "This funding will allow school boards to make sure there are proper supports available during the transition from therapy to school."

Thompson says the long term plan will be supported by four pillars; professional development, funding, after-school programs and collaboration.

"When new teachers enter the system, their onboarding will have increased training in support with students of ASD," added Thompson. "That said, we understand the need for boards to address priorities for their schools as well. My ministry will once again provide over $3 billion in special education funding."

The province also plans to increase funding to the Geneva Centre for Autism in Toronto to $2 million a year to provide over 4,000 educators a year ASD training.
