The Bluewater Recycling Association is no longer accepting certain materials, and aerosol cans top the list.
Company President Francis Veilleux said last year in North America there were 385 fires in facilities like Bluewater's that were caused by aerosol cans that were not empty. They are also a danger to the people who have to handle them.
Milk cartons and juice boxes also create problems when they come into the plant.
"Some of them go flat and some stay in three-dimensional shape, they don't behave very well in our processing facility," said Veilleux. "The majority of the containers end up as a contaminant in other streams, so they would hide in our newspaper or cardboard or other places."
Veilleux also reiterated people do not accept disposable coffee or tea cups. Even though they get thousands of them every year, he says they have never accepted them.
Bluewater Recycling Association is sending out flyers to all of its households in the next month, outlining what they can and cannot accept in curbside collections.
