Central Huron Mayor, Jim Ginn, says there is finally some action on the purchase of the former Bluewater Centre for Young Offenders on Highway 21.
Ginn says, at this week's council meeting, they approved a company for the demolition of the building.
“At the council meeting we approved a company for the demolition of the building and the price fell within the allotted price that the Province is allowing us to take off the purchase price for the demolition. So that was good.”
The building had been empty for so long it couldn't be salvaged, and Ginn reveals the cost of the demolition is over four million dollars.
Ginn adds they also have a potential buyer.
“We have signed a letter of intent with a company for a lease. So it's somewhat dependent on that company getting Federal funding. Unfortunately, we had to sign confidentially agreements with that company, so I can't divulge any information.”
Ginn could only say the lease would come into effect in about a year and a half.
The centre was officially closed in 2012 and sits on 300 acres off of Highway 21, south of Goderich.
