The MPP for Perth-Wellington has announced new funding to help local law enforcement expand their video surveillance systems.
A release from the office of Matthew Rae states that $235,000 in funding will be split between the North Perth OPP, West Perth OPP and Stratford Police Service to "replace outdated equipment, expand or enhance current technology, and install new or additional CCTV surveillance cameras in areas where gun and gang violence and correlated crimes, such as drug and human trafficking, are most prevalent." $200,000 of the funding will be going to the Stratford Police Force to bolster CCTV capabilities in Stratford.
The funding from the Ontario CCTV Grant program is part of Ontario’s Guns, Gangs and Violence Reduction Strategy and represents a 6 million dollar investment across the province over three fiscal years through 2023. It was launched in August of 2020.
“I know this funding will help local law enforcement continue to keep our communities safe,” said Rae. “Having the most up-to-date and modern equipment will allow them to better protect and serve our communities.”
“Our government is determined to provide police services with the tools and resources they need to keep Ontarians safe,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “CCTV surveillance systems are an important part of local police work to detect, prevent, and deter criminal activity, especially in areas of gun and gang violence and other serious crimes.”
