Preparing for tornadoes in Bruce County

The Bruce County Emergency Management Program is urging residents and visitors to be aware of tornado risks and to know what to do if a tornado watch or warning is issued.

Canada experiences around 50 tornadoes annually, with Bruce County recently facing tornado watches.

Bruce County Emergency Management Coordinator Ray Lux urges everyone to take watches and warnings seriously.

"Tornadoes can be very deceptive. They may appear to be standing still, but in fact they may be moving towards you. We encourage all Bruce County residents and visitors to heed tornado watches and warnings that may be issued. Have a plan in place whether you are at work, home, the cottage or one of our beautiful parks. Know the risks and where you would go to get shelter,” he said.

Signs of a tornado include a dark sky with green or yellow clouds, flying debris causing a rumbling or whistling sound, or a funnel cloud at the base of a thunderstorm.
