Georgian Bluffs has acquired more of the highly sought after FoodCyclers - an indoor composter that turns food waste into garden feed.
The township, in partnership with Food Cycle Science, first launched the FoodCycler program last year, with 100 of the countertop units being sold to area residents. This resulted in 27.9 metric tonnes of food waste being diverted from local landfills, according to township officials. Building on that success, the program was extended into this year with 100 additional units selling out in just two weeks. Now the township has replenished its stock with another 100 units available for purchase.
"We’re thrilled to see the continued success of the FoodCycler Program in Georgian Bluffs,” Chief Administrative Officer Niall Lobley said in a statement. “This initiative offers a practical, impactful solution for reducing household waste, empowering households to contribute to environmental sustainability right from their kitchens. By participating, you’re not just reducing your carbon footprint—you’re playing a vital role in fostering a greener, more sustainable future for our community.”
FoodCyclers work by heating and grinding food waste into a dry, odourless, and nutrient-rich by-product that can be used in gardens and on houseplants.
People participating in the program are encouraged to track the amount of waste they divert over a 12-week period and then report back to the township through an online survey.
The current stock of FoodCyclers are available on a "first-come, first-serve" basis. They range in cost from $150 or $300 plus HST, depending on size and can be purchased at the Township Office at 177964 Grey Road 18 during regular business hours.
The township noted that Earth Machine and Green Cone outdoor composters are also available for sale.
