Residents in Georgian Bluffs can expect to see scooter-mounted scanners making their way down township sidewalks until the end of the month.
The township is using the advanced StreetScan technology to collect data to assess the state of sidewalks and help staff prioritize where repairs and replacements should be made. The scanner identifies unsafe conditions in the sidewalks, including cracks and tripping hazards.
"Sidewalk scanning is non-invasive, and no disruptions to local traffic or pedestrian access are expected," the township said in a statement. "Residents are encouraged to watch for the scanning scooters and allow them space to complete their work safely."
Georgian Bluffs puts $100,000 into its sidewalk replacement program annually. The scans being done throughout the month of June are billed as a key part of the township's effort to improve pedestrian safety and maintain community infrastructure.
