Owen Sound Innovates Showcase announced

The Scenic City is officially gearing up to prove that world-class breakthroughs are no longer reserved for big-city skylines as it prepares to host a high-energy showcase of rural ingenuity.

Dubbed Owen Sound Innovates, the in-person event will take over the Sydenham Campus on Tuesday, May 12, at 5:30 p.m., serving as a local centrepiece for Canadian Innovation Week. The nationwide movement, powered by the Rideau Hall Foundation, aims to shine a light on the brilliant minds and bold partnerships keeping Canada at the global forefront of progress.

The evening promises a deep dive into the surprising diversity of regional talent, stretching from the frontiers of nuclear medicine to the artistry of the kitchen. Attendees will witness how local researchers are bridging the gap between healthcare and the dramatic arts, proving that the next big idea often emerges from the most unexpected collaborations.

The program is set to kick off with a heavy-hitting panel focused on the Southwestern Ontario Isotope Coalition, where local leaders and experts will explore how the region is carving out a massive opportunity in life-saving medical technology.

Following the technical discussion, the atmosphere will shift from the laboratory to the landscape with a fireside chat featuring Naagan. Acclaimed chefs Keeshig and Samantha Chevrier will pull back the curtain on their award-winning craft, showcasing how they transform foraged local ingredients into world-class non-alcoholic drink pairings. This intersection of tradition and modern technique highlights the unique spirit of the region.

“There are many powerful stories unfolding in rural communities like ours," Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy noted. "Owen Sound Innovates is an opportunity to celebrate the people and partnerships pushing boundaries locally and regionally, and we invite the community to learn, connect, and take pride in what’s being built here.”

The innovation continues with a unique look at how local actors from the Roxy Little Theatre are stepping off the stage and into the world of research to help advance regional healthcare studies. This collaborative spirit is what local officials believe fuels the region's long-term economic strength.

“Innovation and collaboration are how we build a resilient and competitive regional economy," added Grey County Warden Andrea Matrosovs. "Owen Sound Innovates showcases ‘made in Grey’ partnerships, products, and ideas that are grounded in community, creating opportunities across diverse sectors.”

As the largest urban hub on the southwest shore of Georgian Bay, Owen Sound is currently leveraging its Vision 2050 plan to transform the city into a magnet for clean energy, life sciences, and marine technology. With a regional population nearing 110,000, the area is proving to be fertile ground for businesses that want to compete on a global scale while maintaining a rural heart.

The showcase is hosted at the Sydenham Campus, the region’s premier hub for skills training and trades. While the event is open to everyone, organizers expect a full house as space is limited. Doors open at 5 p.m., and those eager to witness the future of the region are strongly encouraged to register in advance.
