United Way announces new Backpack Program coordinator

United Way Bruce Grey has announced a new coordinator for its Backpack Program.

In a press release on Monday, United Way revealed that Afreen Rahman will take over the position. Also, registration for the program is now open for eligible low-income families throughout Bruce and Grey counties.

The annual Backpack Program helps thousands of students every year with critical school supplies. Each backpack is filled with grade-appropriate school supplies, ensuring students are ready to learn from the very first day of class.

Registration for the program is open until August 24, 2026 at 8:30 a.m. Simply call 211 to register for it. The backpacks contain supplies like notebooks, pens, pencils, and other essential school supplies for all different types of grades and classes.

The Backpack Program relies heavily on donations to keep up with the rising demand for it year-over-year. Last year alone, United Way Bruce Grey distributed 2,301 backpacks to local students.

Community members wishing to support the program can make a donation or learn more by visiting www.Backpacks4Kids.ca.

"I was interested in this position because it gives me a chance to get out in the community and help out as much as I can," said new Backpack Program coordinator Afreen Rahman. "I'm looking forward to connecting with families, volunteers, schools, and community partners to make sure every child has the tools they need to succeed."
