Over 1,000 speeding charges were laid by West Region OPP officers during the Labour Day long weekend as part of a traffic safety education and enforcement campaign.
Provincial police said this year's campaign targeted the "Big Four" bad driving behaviours: aggressive driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, distracted driving, and impaired driving.
"These remain the leading contributing factors to death, injury and property damage on Ontario roads and highways," read an OPP media release.
Between September 4 and September 7, OPP officers conducted 2,330 traffic stops, up from 2,155 last year.
In total, 1,004 speeding charges were laid across the west region, up from 814 in 2025.
Of the 13 detachments in the west region, Haldimand County noted the fewest number of speeding charges at 24.
Essex County saw the highest number of speeding charges with 165, followed by Middlesex with 163, and Wellington with 118.
In Lambton County, 62 speeding charges were laid.
During the long weekend, West Region OPP officers also issued a total of 172 seatbelt charges, 52 impaired driving offences, 37 stunt driving charges, and 11 distracted driving charges.
