Major upgrades planned at Imperial Theatre

A million dollar rejuvenation is planned for the Imperial Theatre in downtown Sarnia.

Executive Director Brian Austin announced the launch of Theatre Sarnia's $1.5 million dollar capital improvement campaign Wednesday night.

"It includes a redesign of the lobby spaces and washroom renovations," said Austin. "We're selling a lot more tickets than we used to and with that increased volume, our bathrooms just aren't up to the task. We are doubling the size of the ladies washroom, increasing the size of our universal washroom and the men's [washroom] will get a face lift too."

Austin said their goal is to make the theatre experience more enjoyable for everyone.

"We're looking at a seating upgrade, a new PA system so when you come see a rock concert the sound quality is as good as it can be and then there's some less exciting things. We need need a new roof. We've already done three phases of the roof and we need to do the final two, which is about $120,000."

Austin said a new $330,000 HVAC system is also needed.

He said they plan to move forward with the washroom upgrades immediately and complete the rest of the work within the next five years, depending on funding.

Austin said they've received two grants to get started, $10,000 from the Sarnia Community Foundation and $150,000 from the Trillium Foundation.

Donations to the campaign can be made at the box office or on the Imperial Theatre website.
