Sarnia Jail inmate tests positive for COVID-19

An inmate at the Sarnia Jail has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Ministry of the Solicitor General told BlackburnNews.com on Friday that the inmate has been in medical isolation since being admitted and is currently receiving the appropriate medical care.

"Protecting the health and safety of our staff and those in our custody is our top priority," said ministry spokesperson Kristy Denette. "That’s why over the last number of months, we have made important operational changes across all our correctional institutions."

Denette said all newly admitted inmates are tested with their consent and separated from the general population for 14 days. Masks are also provided to inmates, and staff are also given the appropriate personal protective equipment.

Anyone visiting the jail is also required to wear a mask and undergo temperature checks.

The jail consistently works with the local public health unit to ensure COVID-19 is conducted when needed.

Lambton Public Health said late Friday afternoon that there are currently no active cases of COVID-19 in the community. A total of 369 cases of the virus have been confirmed in the local region since the beginning of the pandemic. The number of deaths stands at 25.
