A Sarnia retirement home is bringing the experience of bridge fries to its residents.
Landmark Village FUN Coordinator Brent Hart said Big Daddy's Chip Truck will be pulling into the home's parking lot May 18.
Hart said the pandemic has been rough on residents, so they wanted to do something extra special by creating a food-truck themed evening.
"We've come up with a neat little photo booth kind of thing for the under the bridge, we're using a ladder and we put together what looks like a roadway and it'll have trucks on it so that it'll look like a bridge, and we're going to use a little kiddie-pool for the water scene with ducks in it, so we're trying to do something just to make them smile really."
Hart said it's been a challenge trying to come up with new and fun things for residents.
"We used to do so many socials with them every month -- we used to do live entertainment and have dance night -- so it was really kind of a shock [when that stopped]," he said. "They've been able to enjoy their communal dining for a little while now, but it's been rough being kind of stuck in their rooms with not a whole lot going on. Myself, I'm used to doing all of the activities with them and we're not able to at the moment, so we're doing a lot of print-off activities for them, so this is something a little bit different."
Chip truck owner Borden Yewchyn said he's proud to be a part of this feel good story.
"Chip truck french fries are a true representation of everyday life in our community! Normalcy is on its way back."
Hart said Yewchyn didn't hesitate for a moment and jumped at the chance to help out the residents. Hart also said that Sarnia Produce is donating the potatoes for Wednesday night's dinner.
Last year, Landmark Village was hit with a COVID-19 outbreak totaling 40 cases, including 30 residents, and six deaths.
