Sarnia hospital opens new mental health patio

Patients at Bluewater Health's Mental Health Unit now have a freshly renovated patio to enjoy.

The hospital announced the opening of the 600 square foot space at its Sarnia site on Monday.

Director of Mental Health and Addiction Services Donna Morreau said it has a relaxing, home-like atmosphere.

It features plants, a noise machine to block outside sounds, and large tinted windows for plenty of natural light.

"In the development of the patio, and the renovations, many patients could see through the door to the patio," said Morreau. "Many of them are very excited. We opened it Monday with a lot of excitement from the patients."

Morreau said the patio, located off the west side of the 27-bed unit, will be mainly used for therapy sessions, and recreation activities, and can also be accessed during patients' free time.

It was renovated from top to bottom with new roofing, windows, HVAC, flooring, and removable ramp.

The $369,000 project was made possible through a $150,000 donation from Dan Edwards' Do It For Sarnia campaign, as well as private donors.

“I was in hospital for almost a year after my accident,” said Edwards. "Recovery taught me so much about the mental aspects of healing, and how much nature improves overall health. Bluewater Health’s Mental Health team provide incredible care to their patients every day, and this patio is an opportunity to expand on that care. I’m excited to see what the future holds for the department."
