UPDATE: Impaired, theft charges laid in Saturday crash

A 19-year-old Sarnia man faces charges, including impaired driving and vehicle theft, after a pick-up slammed into a traffic standard on Saturday.

Sarnia police said it happened at around 8 p.m. at the corner of Front and Exmouth Streets, knocking over the pole.

Police said the vehicle narrowly missed several others, and finally came to a stop on a grassy area on the west side of Front Street. It sustained significant damage.

The driver allegedly tried to run from the scene but was detained by witnesses, behind the police station on Water Street.

Police said the suspect became combative and belligerent during the arrest, and refused to perform a breath test.

Kyle James Fraser, 19, of Sarnia is charged with operation while impaired, refusal to comply with demand, dangerous operation, fail to remain, driving with no licence, failing to stop for a red light, theft of a motor vehicle and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Repairs were completed Sunday morning and the intersection reopened at 11 a.m.
