Sarnia Fire and Rescue and Ontario Fire Marshal investigators are at the scene of a structure fire that sparked at around midnight on Brock Street North.
Fifteen firefighters from three stations were called to the 100 Block of Brock Street North at 12:04 a.m. Friday.
Public Education Officer Mike Otis said a heavy amount of smoke was seen coming from the second floor.
Three occupants and the family dog made it out of the home safely. One person was taken to Bluewater Health for possible smoke inhalation but was not admitted.
Otis said because firefighters were quick to extinguish the flames, most of the damage is due to smoke. The damage is estimated at $40,000.
A cause remains under investigation.
Sarnia Fire Rescue is reminding residents of the importance of having working smoke alarms.
"Smoke alarms definitely save lives and we've seen that time and time again," said Otis.
It's required by law to have working smoke alarms on every storey of one's home and outside of every sleeping area.
