County grant program prioritizes Indigenous heritage projects

Lambton's Creative County Grant Program has started receiving funding applications for cultural, heritage, and arts initiatives in 2022.

Committee Chair Brian White said organizers of new or expanding initiatives can apply online for funding to cover up to 50 per cent of project costs.

"Creative county looks for programs that are culturally relevant to Lambton county specifically, we tend to favour things that are interactive that either involve the community or talk about heritage and culture in different ways," said White.

While the program is normally reserved for operational expenses, the committee has expanded its application criteria due to ongoing public health restrictions preventing many cultural events and programs from taking place.

"Minor capital expenses [will be considered]. Not repairs, not building, and structural capital, but items that would be used towards maybe monuments, statues, small recording devices or things that could help you promote your project online."

White said projects led by or in partnership with Indigenous communities will also be prioritized.

"We really believe that with the promotion this year of pushing towards stories of reconciliation or Indigenous history, that we can be much more inclusive to Indigenous communities across Lambton county."

Applications will be accepted until November 15 at 4 p.m. at lambtononline.ca/creativecounty.

The county has allocated $75,000 in funding for the 2022 program year.
