McHappy Day supports ACCESS Open Minds

Proceeds raised locally through this year's McHappy Day will go directly to supporting children and youth.

Sarnia-Lambton franchise co-owner Colleen Buckley said a portion of the proceeds from every food and beverage item sold will be split, with 75 per cent supporting ACCESS Open Minds and 25 per cent for the Ronald McDonald House of London.

ACCESS Open Minds is a youth mental health and addictions hub. A site in Sarnia is expected to open in the fall.

Ronald McDonald House Charities Southwestern Ontario (RMHC) supports families traveling to Windsor or London. The organization said about 65 per cent of families live outside of a city that has a children's treatment hospital.

Several local families have received support from RMHC as they remain strong for their loved ones. Victoria Ryan of Adelaide Metcalfe said their experience was "wonderful" but difficult to explain.

Ryan said her 8-year-old daughter, Jade, was diagnosed with cancer in August of 2015 with a "massive glioblastoma brain tumour." She spent a total of 194 nights at the Ronald McDonald House.

"She has her own ailments but it's okay. We have survived this brain tumour," said Ryan. "Ronald McDonald House takes care of the mothers. It supports and it comforts [them] on their worst days."

Jade has been tumour and cancer free for six years.

Last year in Sarnia over $12,200 was raised for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and just under $4,100 supported the Ronald McDonald House of Southwestern Ontario.
