The Kiwanis Club of Sarnia-Lambton Golden K is hoping a new literacy program will help children develop a love for books.
The club recently partnered with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to introduce the program in Sarnia in September.
The country music legend started the initiative in the U.S. and it later expanded into Canada. The program provides free age-specific books each month to kids from the time they're born until the age of five.
At this time, it is only available to young children in the area of Sarnia, south of London Road, west of Modeland Road, and north of Campbell Street.
"We arranged funding for up to 100 kids in our first phase so if we opened it up to every household in Sarnia-Lambton, we would be swamped. We would have way too many kids to try and look after," said Golden K President Tony Wheeler.
Through various sources, Wheeler said funding was secured for the first three years of the program.
"I'm hopeful that it will continue and we can expand it and increase the number of kids involved but it's all going to depend on funding, that's really what it's going to come down to."
Those interested in registering their child for the program can do so through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Canada website.
