More feedback sought on future of Sarnia's Germain Park

The City of Sarnia wants more input on the future of Germain Park as it looks to beautify and improve the 60 acre site.

A draft master plan has been developed, based on previous public feedback, and now the city wants more community engagement.

The first survey generated over 800 responses featuring various opinions.

Concepts for the park, located in the centre of the city, include a new splash pad, multi-use court, accessible playground, washrooms, a walking loop and parking expansions.

City Communications Manager Steve Henschel said it's important to keep the aging park viable for everyone to enjoy.

"It's used by a variety of user groups," said Henschel. "You have everything from athletics on the fields to people enjoying the horticulture of the community gardens there. The Strangway Centre itself is also a very busy recreational spot for the city. So, it's a very valued part of our recreational landscape and one that the community really enjoys."

A permanent off-leash dog park, sport field improvements, and space for a potential multi-use indoor recreation facility are also being considered.

You can go to www.speakupsarnia.ca/GermainPark for more information and to provide your thoughts on the park.

The deadline to complete the online survey and to submit further input is at 12 p.m. on February 17.

An open house is also being held at the Strangway Centre on February 8 between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Henschel said public feedback will be considered before the final Germain Park Master Plan is presented to city council in March. He said the plan will guide future capital works at the park, with a phased-in approach dependent on funding availability.
