Blackwell Road to get community safety zone

A community safety zone will be created along a portion of Blackwell Road where residents have called for increased safety measures for pedestrians and bicycles.

Speeding fines will be doubled, and staff will make a recommendation to council about possible speed limit reductions at its next meeting on May 15.

Councillor Anne Marie Gillis called for the community safety zone Monday.

"When it comes to people's safety, particularly children's safety and seniors' safety, I think we need to be very proactive," said Gillis.

Council directed staff to install "Share the Road" signage.

"I'm glad to see that the "Share the Road" is going to go forward and we do have money to put that in," she said. "Because, it has been proven around the county, when it was first implemented by the Lambton Trail System, that it is very effective."

Gillis agreed with statements made during the previous meeting that Blackwell Road has changed.

"That was a rural part of Sarnia. Sarnia is moving out and you have to take into account that people have the ability and the desire to live in that area. They're living there with their children, and people who have homes that want to age in place are out there as well. Seniors walking on those roads... Those are dangerous roads and we have to take that into account," Gillis added.

A photometric review, to investigate the need for improved lighting, will be done at the intersection of Blackwell Road and Telfer Road.

A request for sidewalks or paved shoulders has been referred to the Active Transportation Master Plan for further consideration.
