Local residents can exchange plants and socialize with other green thumbs in the community during the inaugural Sarnia Plant Swap on Earth Day.
That’s What She Grows, a plant nursery in downtown Sarnia, has organized the event in support of the John Howard Society.
Participants can bring their plants to swap with others from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Imperial City Brew House in Sarnia on April 22.
That's What She Grows Owner Nicole Warner said this initiative was more common in Vancouver, which is where she's from.
"I just thought that this was a great opportunity to combine my love of plants and supporting a wonderful fundraiser," Warner said. "I feel like a lot of people don't really know all the benefits the John Howard Society provides to Sarnia. The John Howard Society provides anger management courses, they provide support to people who feel discriminated against, so they're a really good resource to have within the community."
Warner hopes to raise anywhere from $3,000 to $4,000 for the local organization.
The plant swap allows people to trade with others without having to purchase new plants at the store or get rid of ones they have an abundance of.
The event will include prizes, drinks, snacks, a selfie wall, an MC, and a reptile section.
"We do have some people bringing in some smaller reptiles," Warner said. "The event itself is pet-friendly."
Warner said she hopes to expand upon the reptile section next year.
Residents are encouraged to purchase tickets online ahead of the event but tickets can also be purchased at the door. Prices range from $10 to $50. General admission is free for those who just want to look around without plants to swap.
VIP tickets (priced at $50) will include a display table, a special lanyard, and a T-shirt.
