Sarnia fire chief to retire next year

Fire Chief Bryan Van Gaver has announced plans to retire in 2024 after spending nearly 40 years with Sarnia Fire Rescue.

Van Gaver started in the service as a firefighter in 1987.

He initially planned to retire as platoon chief but took an interim role as deputy chief in 2013 that later became permanent. He was appointed fire chief in 2020.

In an interview with Sarnia News Today, Van Gaver said he felt honoured to work for the city he was born and raised in.

"This job, I've loved it since day one, so being a part of the organization for so many years has been a highlight all on its own," he said.

The City of Sarnia highlighted some moments from Van Gaver's career in a media release, such as enhancing mental health support for firefighters and increased physical protection. He was also "a driving force" in the process of establishing a new fire station.

“Bryan’s leadership and wealth of experience will be missed but we are excited for him to be entering this well-deserved part of his life," said City of Sarnia CAO Chris Carter. "He has been a tremendous leader for our fire team, and a driving force behind ongoing improvements."

Reflecting on the past, Van Gaver said many improvements have been made to support firefighters over the years, specifically when it comes to health and safety.

"You are thrown into situations that are very abnormal and it's difficult for people," he said. "When those calls were finished, you really had nowhere to turn, it was something you dealt with yourself quietly. But now, we have mechanisms in place, people to talk to, avenues where we can reach out."

His retirement will officially come into effect on March 31, 2024.

While Van Gaver plans to spend more time with his family and friends once he retires, he also wants to spend the first few months doing "absolutely nothing."

The City of Sarnia will begin looking for a replacement in the fall with plans to have the new chief start well before Van Gaver’s retirement date.

To the successful candidate, Van Gaver said they'll be working with a great team.

"It never ceases to amaze me, on a daily basis, some of the problems that our staff face and how they're able to come together and mitigate those problems," he said. "Teamwork is key and they show it every day."
