Power outages, downed trees and possible flooding from heavy rain and storms

Bluewater Power crews were kept busy dealing with storm related power outages early Thursday morning.

Since 2:45 a.m., the utility responded to half a dozen outages from the Bright's Grove area to downtown Sarnia.

Hundreds of customers in the Wellington Street and Russell Street area were still without power as of 7 a.m.. A fallen tree on Wellington Street between Siddal Street and Walnut Avenue is to blame.

Over 500 residents in the Village of Point Edward were also without power for several hours because of tree contacts according to Bluewater Power's outage map. The utility was hoping to have power restored by 8 a.m. Thursday.

Meanwhile, the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority has issued  a water safety statement.

It said water levels are anticipated to be elevated from the rainfall with the potential for minor flooding into natural floodplain areas, parks and fields.

River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion. Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water.

A rainfall warning was issued late Wednesday night by Environment Canada advising of up to 75 millimetres of possible rainfall. The warning was lifted just before 5:30 a.m. Thursday.
