Day of Caring marks official launch of United Way campaign

About 150  volunteers are donating their time at 30 job sites across the county Tuesday.

It's the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton's 28th Annual Day of Caring.

Community Investment and Finance Director Pamela Bodkin said jobs range from painting, cleaning, yard work to small building projects.

"These volunteers will be doing work at non-profit agencies like basic maintenance of the building, so that the agency is then able to spend more of their donated dollars on direct human care services instead of the maintenance of their location," said Bodkin. "The volunteers will also be going to individuals' homes who are in need of a little extra help just keeping their homes safe."

Bodkin said over the years they've seen an increase in the number of seniors asking for some help as they aim to stay in their homes longer.

"As well, the number of sponsors has really increased," she said. "So as word of mouth spreads and more companies learn of the event they're willing to get involved which is really great for our entire community."

Bodkin said the annual Day of Caring marks the official kickoff to their fundraising campaign.

The goal for the 2023 fundraising effort is $1.4 million.  So far about 32 per cent, or around  $448,000, has been raised.

A total of 17 local agencies receive funding from the United Way, including Lambton Elderly Outreach, Sarnia-Lambton Rebound and River City Vineyard.
