Firefighters responded to the blaze at around 8:40 a.m. at a home in the area of Florence Avenue and Egan Avenue.
Fire Chief Rick Cousins said the fire was quickly contained to the garage.
A damage estimate was not immediately available.
Construction in a north Sarnia neighbourhood was halted on Wednesday, after human remains were discovered.
In partnership with the Sarnia Kin Club, the city has planned several daytime and evening events, which typically see a large turnout.
