Anticipation builds ahead of sold-out Granfondo

Sunday's eighth annual Bluewater International Granfondo is the largest one yet.

Over 1,000 cyclists have registered for the popular event and, for the first time, there's a waiting list to get in.

Chair Ken MacAlpine said registration has been shut off.

"We order jerseys from Italy that we give to each participant, and we have to order them at least two months ahead of the event," said MacAlpine. "We order just over 1,000 jerseys, so we wouldn't have enough jerseys or bib numbers for any other participants. Plus, any more than 1,000 riders really starts to put a stress on the volunteers and the roads. We've got a 100 per cent safety record and we'd like to keep it that way."

The Granfondo begins and ends at Bright's Grove's Mike Weir Park, and riders have four route options, ranging from 30 kilometres to 150km.

The first race is the 150km event, which gets underway at 7 a.m.

MacAlpine said the they keep the course generally the same, along the shores of Lake Huron, since the feedback is always positive.

"We've put out surveys and talked with the participants and there aren't really any requests for change," he said.

MacAlpine said over half of the riders are from Lambton County, and they range in age from 10 to 84-years-old.

"There's a large contingent from London as well as Mississauga and the Greater Toronto Area," he said. "We have people from Windsor, Chatham, Stratford, as far as Sault St. Marie, Ottawa and all across Canada."

Lambton OPP put out a statement, reminding drivers to be on the look out for increased bicycle traffic.

"The OPP is asking the motoring public to plan-ahead and allow for extra travel time," it said. "Exercise caution, be mindful of increased bicycle traffic, and to share the road safely with cyclists."

The Shelly Rastin Band will be there to provide entertainment.

The funds raised through the Granfondo are put toward palliative care efforts in the Sarnia-Lambton area.
