Fire Prevention Week highlights life saving smoke alarms

Sarnia Fire Rescue Services is reminding residents to make sure their smoke alarms are in working order as Fire Prevention Week kicks off.

This year's theme is "Smoke Alarms: Make them work for you!".

"We really want to remind everyone that smoke alarms are required in every storey of your home and outside of your sleeping areas," said Public Education Officer Mike Otis.

He said it's been proven that smoke alarms save lives.

"Unfortunately most of the people that pass away in fires are because they do not have working smoke alarms, so it's really important that everyone has smoke alarms," Otis said.

Throughout the week Sarnia Fire Rescue will visit area schools to speak with children about fire safety.

Otis said fire crews will also be set up at Lambton Mall.

"(We'll) have a fire safety table with lots of giveaways and information for anyone that has any fire safety questions or concerns," he said.

Otis said there will also be some giveaways.

The fire safety initiative runs until Saturday, October 12.

Fire Prevention Week is the longest safety event in North America, and coincides with the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire that killed 300 people in 1871.
