Barns destroyed in Oil Springs fire

Damage is estimated at $100,000 following a barn fire in Oil Springs on Tuesday.

Oil Springs - South Enniskillen Fire Department Chief Al Charleton tells Sarnia News Today that crews responded to a fully involved structure fire on Shiloh Line, in the area of Black Ash Road, in the late afternoon.

"There were two barns," said Charleton. "One was empty to the best of my knowledge and the other had some farm implements in it. There wasn't really a whole lot of loss."

The cause was determined to be accidental.

"Fortunately, no injuries whatsoever. It was a defensive tactic on that one. We just stayed back and threw an awful lot of water at it. Nobody was really in a position to get hurt," Charleton said.

Heavy equipment was brought in to help access stubborn hot spots.

"Once the bulldozer started, we were able to pull [the fire] apart really quick and get everything flipped over so we didn't have to go back. It's those rekindles that we don't want," he said.

Charleton said extra care was taken to keep the fire from spreading to a newly built home on the property and crews left the area by 8 p.m.

The Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Department provided mutual aid.
